Toma and Anna are a contemporary Romeo and Juliet--one Croat and one Serb. A young couple in love, they marry with the blessing of both families at what seems to be the ideal time; the Berlin Wall has been torn down, Communism has collapsed, and freedom is not only in the air, but in every heart. But Yugoslavia explodes into a hideous medusa... a country writhing with poisonous snakes of nationalism, bigotry, greed, myths of race and blood all seeking to outdo each other. Each individual is caught up without choice, without decision in a mindless war that suddenly penetrates every expanse, even their souls. As the bombs and destruction envelope them, Anna's pregnancy serves as a calendar of the swelling madness. Love atrophies, hatred kills. Never more so than the moment when Toma finds himself looking at his child-to-be through the scope of his own weapon.
