Alda and Olga are sisters, living a bleak life on a small island, in a house overlooking the graveyard, surrounded by pictures of their dead relatives. These relatives include another sister who died as a baby. Alda teaches at the local high school, and has a series of meaningless flings with married men, while Olga looks after her own daughter, and keeps the house. Gradually, it becomes clear that the house and Olga harbor a dark secret.
