In the rural Basque Country of the early 30s, as the Republic begins to change over from a religious to a secular state, visions of the Virgin Mary are reported by villagers from the small town of Ezkioga. Visiting the village, school teacher Joshe falls in love with barmaid Usua. But Usua's unwavering belief in these local apparitions will ultimately test their relationship.
