If you’re interested in finding out what happened at the box office this weekend, we suggest you take a quick look at this link to our report on last weekend’s box office. Because almost nothing changed at all.
Yes, for the third weekend in a row, the top three films were “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2″ ($17.4 million), “Skyfall” ($17 million) and “Lincoln” ($13.5 million). And that’s not all: “Rise of the Guardians,” “Life of Pi” and “Wreck-It Ralph” also once again finished in fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively, meaning the top six films ended up in the exact same order as last weekend. The more things change, the more they… don’t.
All of which is another way of saying that the weekend’s biggest new release, Brad Pitt’s moody gangland drama “Killing Them Softly,” was a complete flop, debuting in seventh place with a paltry $7 million. Which actually isn’t a huge surprise, as this is traditionally one of the worst weekends of the year to debut a film; the last new release to even break the $10 million mark on this weekend was the 2005 dud “Aeon Flux” of all things.
Still, “Killing Them Softly” has to be a considered a major disappointment given that it stars Pitt, one of the biggest names in Hollywood. And word of mouth is unlikely to save it either, as despite really good reviews, audiences gave the film a rare F Cinemascore. Ouchies.
So will “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ ever get knocked off of its perch atop the box office? Or should we just name Bella Swan box office dictator for life? Considering the only wide release coming out next weekend is the Gerard Butler romcom “Playing for Keeps,” it’s very possible we could see this same top three again for a fourth week in a row unless everyone has simply seen them all by then.
