A film that portrays the unique culture of the Gullah people by focusing on the extended Peazant family as its members struggle with the decision to leave their island and move north. In 1967, old friends Henri and Jules are separated when Henri goes off to Paris to study. Apart for years, Henri travels to America with his lover Emilie while Jules stays in France to write. The three keep up a lively correspondance and when Henri and Emilie return to France, they too are separated. As the years pass, the three stay in touch and occassionally meet, sharing their ideas and experiences through letters and conversation.
