When Sheriff John Little retires from his post as sheriff, the job goes to Jimmy Price, making him the first black sheriff in this rural southern county. Neither expect an easy transition, but when a white man is arrested from another town for killing a small child in a hit-and-run accident, the jailed boy's father, a powerful man from the next county, organizes a white mob to get his son out of jail by force.
