After a failed suicide attempt, Maria, a political refugee from El Salvador, winds up in a posh psychotherapy office where she and her therapist cultivate a bond that goes well beyond the patient-doctor relationship. Dr Schaeffer encourages Maria to fight to find her disappeared children, whom she had previously given up for dead.
