A disgraced major, who lives with the ghosts of what he perceived as cowardice in an attack on the Mexican rebel Pancho Villa, has the chance to redeem himself when a general, with an axe to grind, orders him and a group of "medal winning" soldiers to embark on an impossible assignment.
