On an island of the coast off a South Atlantic US state, a young girl is left under the care of a handyman, when her grandfather dies. One day, a black man, running from a lynch mob, arrives there and suspicions abound wether he will molest the girl, but eventually the handyman and the escapee form an uneasy truce.
