Crossword puzzles, supermarket runs, doctor visits--Judy and Allen Wagner fill in the small moments of their commonplace married lives in New York City as best they can. Until one day, Judy impulsively takes charge and changes the course of familial history by forcing an impromptu road trip on her husband and two unmarried, thirty-something daughters in the hope of repairing her relationship with her son Andrew, a reclusive filmmaker living in Los Angeles. On the road to California, the family is forced to come together and work through their histories and deep-seated resentments, for better or worse.
