In German occupied Poland at the dawn of World War II, Oskar, a young German officer, and Rachel, the daughter of a Rabbi, fall in love. Forced apart by violent village massacres, they embark on a perilous journey to find one another. Pregnant, and resigned to the fact she will never be re-united with Oskar, Rachel marries Bernard, an honorable Jewish man who is willing to be father in hopes of earning her love.
