synopsis
U.S. Army Major Bennett Marco can’t sleep at night--and hedoesn’t want to. Marco spends his days giving inspiring speeches about his platoon’s ambush in the Kuwaiti desert and the heroics of Sergeant Raymond Shaw, who won the Medal of Honor for saving Marco’s crew. But at night, Marco’s dreamlike memories of the desert turn sinister and terrifying. And Marco privately wonders whether the two soldiers who died in the firefight might have met darker fates than officially recorded--andwhether Shaw might not be the glorious hero that everyone thinks he is. When Shaw takes the national stage as a surefire candidate for vice president--under the thumb of his controversial mother, Senator Eleanor Prentiss Shaw-–Marco is forced to act on his growing suspicions. With military officials questioning his sanity, and the net of security tightening around Shaw, Marco races to probe deeper into the unimaginable, shocking truth before the White House is won.

The Manchurian Candidate isn't so much a remake of the 1962 John Frankenheimer classic as a watered-down hallucination of it, as if someone threw all the original script pages in the air and then chased them down a windy beach. Story Pity poor Raymond Shaw (Liev Schreiber). Captured while fighting in the first Gulf War, he is subjected to behavioral modification experiments at the hands of an evil corporation. The brainwashing is so gruesomely succesful that Shaw will even kill one of his own

Grab this special-edition DVD of John Frankenheimer's 1962 satirical thriller about brainwashing and an assassination during a political convention, and see what director Jonathan Demme is up against with his current remake. Frank Sinatra excels as a Korean War vet who uncovers secrets about his hero pal (Laurence Harvey). And Angela Lansbury is a marvel as Harvey's mommy dearest. The "making of" extras add to the kick.

Full disclosure: I believe that John Frankenheimer's 1962 Manchurian Candidate is a classic political satire and pulse-pounder that no one needed to remake. That said, director Jonathan Demme's remake isn't half bad. In fact, it's a mesmerizing mind-teaser that finds its own way into the material, adapted from Richard Condon's 1959 novel. Instead of the brainwashing Commie threat posed by the first film -- set in the Korean War era -- the menace this time is the mind control exerted by powerful
