Rafael has lived a solitary life as a butcher, quietly suffering the loss of his manhood brought about by a work-related accident. He breaks his vow of solitude when he sees Marina being beaten by her boyfriend Daniel. Rafael learns that Marina and Daniel have both lived hard lives and that she is carrying his child. Marina and Rafael set up the domestic life each has longed for while raising Marina's daughter Estrella. Daniel appears a few years later and needs a place to stay. Although Daniel makes trouble, Rafael weathers all in order to keep his family together.
