A streetwise boy and an upper-class, half-blind girl, now a street artist, play out their passionate romance on the Pont-Neuf in Paris. Alex is a fire-eater whose only friend is Hans, an older man who lives on the bridge. Then he meets Michele who has run away from her home and is only too willing to escape into a world of romance and irrationality. But soon posters of Michele appear in the streets, showing her as a missing person. Alex is desperate to keep Michele with him, but she is tempted to return to her conventional life.
