synopsis
Citizens of Angola struggle to piece themselves back together after the end of the country's thirty year civil war. The tale centers around the lives of four extraordinary characters: ex-soldier Vitório, whose leg was blown off by a landmine; Maria Barbara, who caters to men who mistreat her and yearns for her missing son; the orphaned young Manu, who gets into trouble in the streets; and Joana, a schoolteacher luckier than the others but cynical about the possibilities of political justice.

It didn't come out this year, but there was actually a Chinese movie called Hero, which I really loved. It stars Jet Li, one of my all-time favorite kung-fu guys [who starred in Romeo Must Die], and Zhang Ziyi, who played the girl from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon -- and a couple of other pretty famous actors from Hong Kong [Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Maggie Cheung]. Honestly, I've probably watched that movie more than thirty times this year alone.
