A psychiatrist is brought into the web of a wealthy Louisiana widow, who wishes him to perform a lobotomy on her niece, whom she says is suffering from madness after the death of her cousin, the widow's son. In exchange for his services, she promises to donate a hefty sum to his hospital, but soon the doctor realizes there's a deeper mystery going on.
