Review: Speed Racer is a Simplistic Story Wrapped in Outstanding Visuals

Emile Hirsch in Warner Bros.'s 'Speed Racer'
Warner Bros.

Speed Racer looks really good. I'll give them that. The story wasn't really for me but there was nothing particularly wrong with it either. It's just a straightforward kid's movie with the best darned effects this side of Space Mountain.

Now for the caveats portion of our review. I've seen a few episodes of Speed Racer on Cartoon Network, but I remember about 45 seconds total of the show. The monkey stands out. So this puppy might have been laced with in-jokes and homages all over the place that the "true" fans will love… Continued

Review: What Happens in Vegas Not a Film to Bet On

Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher in 20th Century Fox's 'What Happens in Vegas'
20th Century Fox

This week's New York-based romantic comedy in which two sworn enemies fall in love after being forced to work on something together is What Happens in Vegas... The film is mechanical and obvious ("comfortable and familiar," a more optimistic critic might say), complete with a leading man named Jack. Jack is what you call your leading man when you don't feel like coming up with a better name for him. When you buy screenplay-writing software, the leading man is named Jack by default, and it remains that way unless you change… Continued

One match-up has already been decided with Swingers moving on to the second round in convincing fashion. Freaks and Geeks has a commanding lead over Saturday Night Live (circa 1995) while Dawson's Creek is locked in a brutal battle with That '70s Show. Here's our final first-round contest: ER vs. The Mickey Mouse Club.

The Case for ER (1994):

George Clooney! Really, this contest should be over now. The man has been named the "sexiest" man alive by People magazine ... TWICE! He's also taken a turn in O Brother, Where ArtContinued

Eric's Bad Movies: Tarzan, The Ape Man (1981)

Bo Derek and Miles O'Keeffe in MGM's 'Tarzan, the Ape Man'

Watching Tarzan, the Ape Man makes me want to take a shower, and not just because Bo Derek spends most of the film bathing. It's a creepy movie, with oily subtexts and greasy themes, and a filmy, oleaginous layer of plaque covers the whole thing. It's exactly the sort of unspeakably filthy movie that you would expect to be made by a dirty old man and his dim trophy wife.

John Derek was 55 when he directed the movie; his wife, bland-model-turned-bland-actress Bo Derek, was 25. They'd been together since he was 46 and she… Continued

The What Happens in Vegas Trailer is Brutally Bad

Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher in 20th Century Fox's 'What Happens in Vegas'
20th Century Fox

When it comes to movie trailers, creators must be original and imaginative about the films they are working to summarize. Thriller trailers must reveal just enough plot and action to get audiences interested; dramas must expose several beautiful scenes which trip the senses; and romantic comedies need to simply spread a little humor over the top of a traditional, light-hearted love story. With a little luck, you’ve got an audience. Well, I recently watched the trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy What Happens In Vegas st… Continued
