You Don't Want to See Me When I'm Angry

Marvel Studios announced this week that they're going to make a sequel to Hulk. The new film will be titled, shockingly enough, The Incredible Hulk. (Wow, they put some real thought into that one.) I have to admit, when I read about it, I was slightly bothered. Not another superhero movie, I thought. Haven't we had enough? Spiderman III, The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Superman Returns .... Whew, I'm superheroed out!

I also remember the first Hulk which, sorry Ang, was a hulking piece of ... well, you know what. Too much computer animation, too little acting, and too confusing of a plot. (What was that thing Nick Nolte turned into in the end anyway?) Why would they want to do a sequel to such a poor first film?

By now, I was mildly annoyed.

Then I read that Eric Bana would not be back as Bruce Banner. Will Jennifer Connelly be back as Betty? I don't know about you, but I hate sequels where the cast changes. Isn't that what basically ruined the original Batman movies? It's Michael Keaton ... no wait, it's Val Kilmer ... no wait, it's George Clooney. Will the real Batman please stand up?

Now I was downright irked.

Then I found out Edward Norton would be playing Banner. Not the Edward Norton? They must mean someone else, right? I mean, the talented thespian who earned an Oscar nomination for American History X wouldn't do a superhero movie, would he? Apparently so. Taking a page from the Michael Caine "I'll Star In Anything!" philosophy of acting, Norton has signed on to play the ill-fated scientist who turns into a green monster when he gets mad.

Okay, now I was straight-up miffed.

In the first Hulk, they went to great pains to make the computer-generated creature look like Eric Bana. So is the Hulk going to have blonde hair and a goatee this time?

On the upside, I found out the film will be directed by Louis Leterrier, who directed The Transporter and worked on Alien: Resurrection, so there will probably be plenty of action. And it struck me that maybe an actor of Edward Norton's caliber will raise this movie to a new level -- the way Christian Bale has elevated the new generation of Batman flicks.

Those thoughts calmed me down a little. Good thing. I was starting to get angry. And you don't want to see me when I'm angry.

Ethan Morris: "Not always right but never in doubt." Go ahead and write me.
