Weekend Preview: We Found the Critic Who Hated Superbad!
Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jonah Hill and Michael Cera in Columbia Pictures' "Superbad" -
Columbia Pictures
I resisted saying it in my review, but Superbad is just plain superbad, okay? I know I'm in a minority on this one (88 percent Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes? Insane!) and now you'll all have the chance to yell at me for not getting it. The movie opens at 2,948 venues in North America today. Also superbad? Invasion, invading 2,776 multiplexes with its confused and boring tale of an alien virus. In one of many poor metaphors the movie deploys, the filmmakers try to liken the mind-altering impact of the alien virus, which makes everyone calm and placid, to psychiatric drugs. Thinking of trying Xanax? Try alien infestation instead! Ask your doctor about the alien virus. Side effects may include extreme sleepiness. It seems more than fair to guess that The Last Legion, marching into 2,002 locations, is also superbad: it wasn't screened for critics. I'll check it out this weekend and report over at FlickFilosopher.com. There's good stuff opening in limited release, though. Death at a Funeral, now on 260 screens, is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Producer/activist Leonardo DiCaprio's eco-documentary The 11th Hour, opening on four screens, is a scary wake-up call about what we're doing to the planet (hint: making it uninhabitable for ourselves). Arctic Tale -- another eco-doc, this one's about polar bears and their disappearing icy realm -- adds screens, bringing it up to 227. And it'll now be easier to find the delightful and romantic Becoming Jane: it bumps up to 1,186 venues today. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-MaryAnn Johanson (email me) reviews, reviews, reviews! at FlickFilosopher.com
