Thoughts and Ruminations on Dirty Harry 6

Clint Eastwood in Warner Bros. Pictures 'Dirty Harry'
Warner Bros. Pictures

A sixth and possibly final Dirty Harry movie? Yes please.

With the success of Sylvester Stallone’s recent career resurrection by revisiting the heroes that made him famous, it was only a matter of time before someone else tapped some of the heroes of old to do the same thing. And really, who better to turn to than one of the hardest heroes of all, Clint Eastwood? Dirty Harry Callahan is one of the greatest anti-heroes of all time, the mold from which most modern crime-busting heroes are either cast or created in direct opposition to. The idea of seeing him come out of retirement to try and solve a crime that hits him a little too close to home sounds like exactly the kind of film I want to watch.

And Eastwood has already once before proven to us that he can make an incredible “aging hero” story. Anyone remember Unforgiven, the film that took him back to his days of playing an outlaw and gave us one of the best Westerns ever made, and certainly the best of the modern era? Yeah, this could be like that. A dirty, gritty crime movie about a cop who was old and crotchety back when we loved him. The idea of Callahan pushing aside the stone on whatever crypt he’s crawling out of sets my stomach all atwitter with butterflies.

And it’s not like the current trend of revisiting the heroes of our youth is anything new. It dates back a long time. Hell, one of the greatest adventure stories ever written, The Man in the Iron Mask, was just such a tale. When France is once again threatened by internal corruption, three aging heroes of old are dug out to help put the rightful ruler back in place on the throne. And those three men, far beyond the prime of their youth, were the Three Musketeers. And that’s what this is; that’s what this could be if handled correctly -- a deep and wonderful tale of a hero returning for one last call of duty.

Tell me you don’t want to see that. Seriously. Please God, let that be what this is.
