The Pros and Cons of Children of Men on TVAs Children of Men heads to the tele what could work well? What should be ditched?
Universal Pictures
There may be a new Children of Men television show in the works. For some of you that may be old news, but the rest of us are left to decide how we feel about this new development. What better way to do that with a pros and cons list? Pro: On the pro side, it'll give the writers time to further develop elements of the movie that die-hard fans felt weren't paid enough time or attention. What is "The Human Project"? What happened after the end of the film? Con: Children of Men was one of the most wrenching, heartfelt and deeply moving films of 2006, with a story that felt almost too real to many people. Perhaps it's best to leave well enough alone? Sequels rarely eclipse the original, and it would be nice to see a standalone without vapid attempts to capitalize on the success. Pro: The strange and almost post-apocalyptic world of Children of Men is one that seems would bear much fruit through further investigation. One major point that has been brought up is the question, "When there is no future generation, and the obsession is with the young, how does that affect a society?" Con: Unless this was a major budget television show, the production value is likely to pale in comparison to the feature film, which could limit the sorts of stories they could tell. Pro: It's likely to be less brutally violent, though much of the film is terribly violent. They'd perhaps be better able to focus on stories that weren't so gruesome. Con: Due to uh, certain events in the film, some characters would not be able to reprise their roles, which could be interesting as new characters could enter the story and take it places not considered in the film Compromise: What if they were to turn it into an HBO miniseries? Miniseries have become highly popular, as they are often able to tell a more complicated and longer story than a movie, with bigger budgets and proper pacing. A television show, especially in the current tough market, could fall easily, whereas a miniseries could take on several definite stories and expand on them fully. What do you think?
