Cultural Impact Battle Royale: SNL vs. Freaks and Geeks

First off, if you haven't voted in the first match-up (Swingers vs. The Daily Show) you can do so here. Now if you're ready for round two, let's do this! The Case for Freaks and Geeks (1999): Judd Apatow wrote five episodes, and he went on to write little films like The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. Additionally, he's one of the writers behind two of this summer's big comedies: The Pineapple Express and You Don't Mess With the Zohan. He also produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall which has taken in $61 million worldwide as of this writing. Freaks and Geeks was also the catalyst behind James Franco's career. He's been in giant franchises like Spider-Man and art-house specials like In The Valley of Elah. Jason Segel's big break was 1999 with Freaks and Geeks too; he went on to star in How I Met Your Mother, Knocked Up, and of course Forgetting Sarah Marshall. We can't forget Seth Rogen, can we? He became part of the Apatow crew after Freaks and Geeks, starring in 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. He's branched out a bit lately, though -- Horton Hears a Who, The Spiderwick Chroncles, and the upcoming Kung Fu Panda come to mind. We also can't neglect Superbad's pop culture influence. McLovin anyone? Linda Cardellini also generated some heat off of Geeks; she's been in 104 episodes of E.R. since then, and also found time for film work like Scooby Doo and Brokeback Mountain. Finally -- and you could call this a stretch but I like her anyway -- Busy Phillips. She went on to Dawson's Creek after Freaks, and was one of the few bright spots in Made of Honor. The Case for Saturday Night Live (1995 edition): Mike Myers filmed his last SNL episode in January of 1995. He's done the Shrek franchise, and Austin Powers since then -- or around three billion dollars in box office worldwide. Adam Sandler's last season of Saturday Night Live was in 1995 too. He's had eight films crack $100m since then: Big Daddy, Mr. Deeds, The Longest Yard, and Click. David Spade could be considered the third musketeer of the SNL troupe; he went on to do seven seasons of Just Shoot Me! He's also in the current Rules of Engagement, which I believe plays on CBS. On a smaller scale, Janeane Garofalo's short SNL stint ended in February of 1995. She's done a few zillion things since then, with highlights including The West Wing, Dogma, and 24. Tim Meadows, Al Franken, and Molly Shannon also appeared in the 1994-1995 season for good measure. So who ya got? Comments
