Channing Tatum As Duke: Will This Work?
Getty Images
I would venture to suggest that Channing Tatum became most widely recognizable for his work in Step Up. He is almost your all-around, all-American-looking boy. He looks athletic, like sporty athletic, yet he was a model. He is clearly a dancer, yet he was cast as a soldier in the upcoming war drama Stop-Loss. He seems to be your average man’s man and he sure is cast as such, but I have been hoping that there is something more underneath, and that Step Up was just his lucky break. Considering his background as an athlete and a student in military school, I’m not holding my breath. Regardless, the girls swoon over him and it seems he is on the verge of mass appeal with roughly five films underway for the upcoming year. The latest hot topic involving Mr. Tatum, however, is director Stephen Sommers’ (The Mummy, Van Helsing, The Scorpion King) upcoming flick G.I. Joe. Tatum is booked to star as the infamous Duke alongside such names as Sienna Miller and Dennis Quaid. The 27-year-old probably won’t have too many issues portraying such a role considering the practice he’s had in past films. Additionally, this will be a total boy film. Come on, G.I. Joe? I swear I was braiding Barbie's hair while my little brother’s G.I. Joes bombed our room 20 years ago. This has boy written all over it, just like Tatum himself. The great part about a flick like this is that none of the actors will really need to work too hard on their performances considering this is one of those movies that will automatically have “followers.” If there is enough suspense with lots of crap blowing up realistically, audiences will applaud wildly; I can almost guarantee this. It’s like Spider-Man 3 in some ways, which is one of the worst films ever made, but because of its following, it made over $336 million. Now, I’m not speculating that G.I. Joe will make anything close to $336 million; I’m just giving you my honest opinion. Whether it is decent or disposable, it will make money. It’s all in the branding. Getting back on topic: Tatum will be solid in this role. While some say he won’t look old enough to portray a battle-weathered man; I say, "Screw that." He’ll be hot and it’ll make girlfriends of G.I. Joe fans around the world relent to their boyfriends' desire to see the movie. Boyfriend: “Babe, let’s go see G.I. Joe this weekend. It looks rowdy.” Girlfriend: “Hell no, it looks like it'll be a bunch of fighting and shooting.” Boyfriend: “Remember that guy you loved in that dumb dance movie you dragged me to? He’s in it.” Girlfriend: “I love him! I suppose I could make room in my schedule.” Boyfriend: “You’re so awesome, let’s go Saturday!” Girlfriend: “No, let’s go Friday!” Comments
