Movies This Weekend That Might Interest You No "Hitter" column on Thursday or Friday (because I have reviews of Body of Lies and The Duchess to write) so I'll hit you up with my advice now. See Body of Lies. Way better than the trailer, and a worthy bookend to Spy Game -- which obviously it looks a lot like. We were originally going to run a column to that effect but the whole idea sort of broke down after a few sentences.
Podcasts That Aren't Mine That I Still Love I subscribe to Bill Simmons, ESPN's Sports Guy, and his quality BS Report. I also dig the Phil Hendrie Show Flashback (on iTunes), a show that's almost too crazy to reasonably explain. But I'll try. Essentially, Phil Hendrie is a guy who "hosts" a radio show where he also does the voices of his guests. His guests are invariably offensive, but it always starts out subtle. Eventually, he involves listeners who don't understand the concepts behind his twisted little mind games, and all the while he takes the sides of the guests calling in (against himself). If you're looking for an intro episode you can try October 1 where he voices his own boss. It's sick ... but hysterical too.
Press Releases of Note I get to interview Kevin Smith next week. That's pleasing! He saved my Comic-Con this year and I'm definitely a fan. It should be a good 20 minutes.
Also some news on the Soul Men soundtrack. A few of the artists involved include Isaac Hayes, Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, and Sharon Jones. Looks as though Sam Jackson and Bernie Mac will be singing on it too.
Lastly, I received this a few weeks ago but just noticed it as I was cleaning out my "press" folder -- the final poster for Valkyrie. Notice anything? You can right-click on it and hit "view image" to see it full size, but I'm taken by how they've toned down Tom Cruise's participation. Sure, his name is prominent on the poster but he's now standing in a crowd of people with half his face shaded. Odd.
Sequel Rumor of the Day Can I interest you in Lethal Weapon 5?
Quote of the Day "Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid. Goethe said that. It's not too late for you to become a person of substance, Russell." - Frances McDormand, Almost Famous (Though I guess in real life the quote should be attributed to Basil King, not Goethe.)
What I Watched Last Night Besides a Movie The debate of course. Seemed pretty typical to me -- we've lost the true sense of "debate" in the last few elections. They should call it "Let's take turns giving speeches." Real debates are scored, not spun. But really, who still hasn't made up their mind? I mean, it's been on non-stop for about 18 months straight. And thus ends Film.com's foray into political talky.
What I'm Reading Right Now 13 Things That Don't Make Sense: The Most Baffling Scientific Mysteries of Our Time. A lot of the hardcore science flies right over my head but the concepts presented are interesting. Each chapter is a different subject so there's a lot in the way of variety too. You can pick it up for $16 if you're interested.
Deep Thought of the Day Why are gas stations allowed to charge 3.599? Where are they getting that extra nine-tenths of a penny from? Under my rule this practice would be stopped. It would be illegal and the violators would be sent to Thule. I mean, I can't even pay $3.599 for a gallon of gas because I don't own any nine-tenths of a penny pieces. Wouldn't you rather they just charged $3.60? I would. At least that would be honest.
Videos For You I'm a Joel McHale fan. And when he gets Yo Gabba Gabba-involved we're all winners.
And finally, the mellow acoustic stylings of Jenny Lewis:
