DVD That Might Interest You Today is a tough day as Zohan was pretty average (except for the seven hummus jokes). I didn't catch The Happening in theaters but it was largely panned. Why not try a little Sleeping Beauty in your life? 30 Rock - Season 2 was also released. We'll be giving away copies on the podcast on Thursday. Exciting!
Oscar Thought of the Day Anne Hathaway is getting an Oscar nomination for Rachel Getting Married. I'm technically not allowed to say what I thought of the film, but I will predict that it won't get much else in the way of accolades outside of Hathaway's performance. Ahem. But she's really good, and she fulfills many of The Academy's prerequisites: 1.) It's a small film that will need DVD sales. 2.) She's a young and buzzy actress. 3.) She emotes despair throughout.
So mark it down. It's happening.
Press Releases of Note Well, for one thing Cinematicalpremiered the new poster for Twilight. Am I sad they didn't give us that to premiere? Yes. Especially because we get double the traffic of that fine site and I wouldn't have made a wisecrack about Robert Pattinson for the final poster release. I may implement some sort of boycott against Summit Entertainment now. Sorry Sex Drive!
Sequel Rumor of the Day I've got two of them. I heard on Pardon the Interruption that Bull Durham is getting a sequel. They didn't give a source (shame on you ESPN), but a simple Google search turns up nothing but the rumor that Kevin Costner recently met with director Ron Shelton to talk about it. Twenty years have passed, so I'm lukewarm on this notion. However, I love baseball films, as something about the pacing seems easier for studios to pull off than other sports... so maybe I'll be proven wrong.
The other big one is a probable Get Smartsequel. To this I say, "Okay." Because Carell has only made one horrific film, and that was Evan Almighty. Everything else he touches turns to comedy gold, and Get Smartwasn't painful to watch. I'll allow it.
Today's Movie Stories on the Internets People are actually trying to download the recent Indiana Jones movie? People. Let me save you some time. That movie was abhorrent.
Johnny Depp is going to get nearly $60m to appear in Pirates 4. Oddly enough, this makes economic sense, as that franchise prints money. And who else could play that role? I'd still prefer that he call himself "John" though. He's not 7 years old, is he?
What I Watched Last Night Besides a Movie I didn't get home until 9 p.m. after my three-movie marathon. But I still caught part of Heroes -- just enough to hate it even more. What happened to the show I once loved? It bears little resemblance to the fun and mystery of the first season, and is now full of incessant and insipid plot strands that lead to nowhere.
Deep Thought of the Day While watching The Godfather at The Cinerama yesterday (with a grand total of four people in a 1,200 seat theater), I was intrigued by how much storytelling methods have changed in the past 35 years. The Coppola film has a really slow build, and doesn't ever stoop to spelling things out. It leaves a ton of room for the audience to think. Now then, I'm not one of those folk that claims one method is better, but films these days clearly have much quicker pacing. I'm not even sure you could get away with a The Godfather anymore. Has television (The Wire, The Sopranos, Dexter) switched places with the feature film? Or, perhaps as communication methods have become speedier so too have the screenplays. Regardless, it was fun to spend a morning in the company of young Pacino.
Videos For You
I really dig this Kings of Leon song. Give it a chance.
And how about a truly mental scene from The Man Who Wasn't There -- a film no one else saw ... anywhere.
