Beverly Hills Chihuahua!!

Let me begin with a disclaimer: I am a proud owner of an adorable Chihuahua named Pixie. Yes, you read it right; it’s Pixie. I would also like to state that she is four and half years old and she was acquired several months before Paris Hilton made small dogs an "it" item and before Britney Spears was named the world's worst pet owner.

Now then. Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly) is set to star in the upcoming Walt Disney Pictures film Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Supposedly, this is a live-action film that chronicles the escapades of a pampered Beverly Hills Chihuahua who spends most of her time riding around in her Piper Perabo's purse until the unthinkable takes place. While on a trip in Mexico, the Chihuahua is separated from her owner and must rely on the help from others to find her way back home. This Chihuahua's name is Chloe and, believe it or not, she's voiced by Drew Barrymore. What is even more astonishing is the number of big names Disney was able to sign onto this bizarre project. Salma Hayek, Jamie Lee Curtis, Andy Garcia, and George Lopez are all also part of this astonishing cast. Sheesh!

I suppose the subject matter explains my initial hesitation to believe in this project. Although I have always been a believer and supporter of classic Disney movies (Robin Hood, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, etcetera) I just don't understand why this is what we've come to. I mean, yes, the traditional fairytale stories have all been covered by Disney, and it is now time to start inventing new classics for the generations to come. However, I can't help but feel like Disney has taken a wrong turn somewhere and I fear we have all been brainwashed by the popularity of Paris Hilton and her dogs and dog purses. Small dogs can be walked on normal leashes; they don't have to be carried in bags. Big dogs can wear rhinestone collars and have palace beds. Big dog barks are just as annoying as small dog barks. I suppose it may be fun for people to indulge in the spoiling of small dogs and for that reason, this film could do well. After all, they can be adorable.

However, I’m not fully onboard. Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo, Big Momma’s House) is set to direct, but frankly, I’m miserable for Piper. She’s an okay actress; she was fun to watch in Coyote Ugly back in 2000. But are you aware of how many projects she has worked on since that film? Well, I was only able to think of one, Because I Said So. Turns out there have been quite a few more that I never heard of. What does this mean? Well, I hope this can be a lucky break for her but I’m afraid this is just another money-making piece of garbage. The Chihuahua is still pretty cute though.
