synopsis
In 1958, Frank Corvin and three other cocky and reckless young pilots lost their chance to be the first Americans in space to a chimpanzee named Mary Ann. In the year 2000, a Russian communications satellite has run into trouble and the only one who can fix it is the man repsonsible for designing its operating system -- Frank Corvin. Frank quickly contacts his three comrades from yesteryear: Tank, who has become a Baptist minister, Jerry, a rollercoaster designer with an active libido, and Hawk, an embittered daredevil pilot. Together they endure the rigors of NASA training and and prepare to become the first senior citizens thrust into space.

Space Cowboys, another movie that the experts were ready to write off as geezers in space, gave director-star Clint Eastwood the biggest opening weekend ($18 million) of his long career. The former Air Force flyboys -- played by Eastwood, 70; James Garner, 72; Donald Sutherland, 66; and Tommy Lee Jones, 53 -- are recruited by NASA to dismantle a wayward Russian satellite. An old Russian radio satellite is falling out of orbit, and the only guys who can fix it are four old geezer pilots who were passed over by NASA 40 years ago. Story Frank Corvin (Clint Eastwood) is an ex-Air Force test pilot and engineer who was bumped from the space program in the 1950s, when the government sent a chimpanzee into orbit instead. Now, Corvin finally gets his chance: NASA needs him (and his four ex-USAF pilot buddies too) to right the course of a derelict Russkie space platform.… |
