Lola has writer's block and is living a frustrated, motiveless life following the breakup with her boyfriend. To escape this existence, she takes on a writing assignment to do a Civil War piece on Rafael Sanchez Mazas, a real-life fascist writer who was supposedly assassinated by Republican troops, but in fact was let escape by one of these soldiers. Lola decides to find this unknown soldier, who turns out to be a man named Miralles in the present day. As her creative juices start to flow again, Lola puts this investigation before her ailing personal life to uncover the truth behind an old man's past he now wants to forget.
