‘Silver Linings Playbook’ Dominates Satellite Awards

The international Press Academy handed out their 17th annual Satellite Awards last night and “Silver Linings Playbook” absolutely dominated, winning five awards including Best Picture, Pest Director for David O. Russell, Best Actor for Bradley Cooper and Best Actress for Jennifer Lawrence. The fifth trophy was for Best Editing.

That sweep of the major categories left very little on the vine for the rest of Hollywood, but there was room for at least one surprise, as Javier Bardem took home the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as the bad guy in the James Bond hit “Skyfall.” The Best Supporting Actress award, meanwhile, went to Anne Hathaway for “Les Misérables.”

There was also a mild upset in the Best Animated or Mixed Media Motion Picture category, as “Rise of the Guardians” topped a wide open field, besting Pixar’s “Brave” and Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph” among others.

With “Silver Linings Playbook” scooping up the big prizes, the other award season frontrunners had to settle for scraps, aka technical and production awards. “Argo,” for instance, won Best Original Score, while “Lincoln” took home Best Production Design and “Zero Dark Thirty” won Best Original Screenplay.
