At the end of the Spanish Civil War, as the Fascists declare victory, a group of Republican freedom fighters, called the 'maquis', retreat into the mountains to continue their guerilla war. In the Autumn of 1944, Lucia is living in a mountain village divided by the conflict. She falls in love with guerilla soldier Manuel, but his safety is soon threatened by the Fascist guards occupying the village.
