synopsis
Lee Holloway is a smart, quirky woman in her twenties who returns to her hometown in New Jersey after a brief stay in a mental hospital. In search of relief from herself and her oppressive childhood environment, she starts to date a nerdy friend from high school and takes a job as a secretary in a local law firm. She soon develops an obsessive crush on her older boss, Mr. Grey. Through their increasingly bizarre relationship, Lee follows her deepest longings to the heights of masochism and finally to a place of self-affirmation.

Maggie Gyllenhaal lends an awkward grace and inhibited charm to this slanted, enchanted ode to S&M love. She's the secretary, a damaged suburban girl who cuts herself with small objects. James Spader is her boss, an agonizingly isolated lawyer who can't tolerate imperfection. Together they stumble toward a freakish bliss that's at once preposterous and wholly believable. Gyllenhaal is a revelation -- whether she's climbing through dumpsters, masturbating (twice!) or just rolling her eyes.
A mentally disturbed young woman from a middle-class family takes a typing course and lands a job with an eccentric lawyer in a shabby office where she learns the joys of sadomasochism and finds true love. Story After Lee (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a mentally disturbed woman who mutilates her body, takes a typing course, she goes looking for a job and is immediately lucky. Lawyer E. Edward Grey (James Spader), obviously not very demanding, hires her as typist in his shabby and not very busy office.

Mary Gaitskill's infamous short story comes to the screen as a film of startling humor and feeling. For that, director Steven Shainberg, who co-wrote the script with Erin Cressida Wilson, owes much to two remarkable performances. Maggie Gyllenhaal boldly steps into the role of Lee Holloway, fresh out of an institution (she cuts and burns herself) and eager to begin her job as secretary to bossy attorney E. Edward Gray (James Spader, twisted and terrific). Lee hasn't been helped much by an
