After Empress Catherine II has her husband Peter killed, 16-year-old rookie soldier Pyotr Grinyov sets off to his first posting at a remote compound. Along the way, he meets fugative Emelian Pugachev to whom he offers a hareskin coat which Pugachev then later uses to convince the Cossacks that he is Peter III. Pugachev then proceeds to lead his rebel forces in a massive attack that prompts a bloody rebellion that sweeps the countryside.
