Maya is a New York City painter whose career hopes have hit bottom. A chance encounter on a bus leads her to Joe, a drifter with a history of petty crime, and the two become lovers. Joe's emotional problems only sharpen the attraction, and May dives headlong into the relationship. Abandoning her apartment, friends, and all restraint, Maya sets out in a stolen car with Joe in hopes of finding a better life.
