Review: Colombiana

C

Colombiana is disappointing Euro-cheese.

The title character in Colombiana is a girl from Bogota whose parents got killed by a drug kingpin, evidently because they were involved in the drug trade themselves and, well, that’s what happens. Not a lot of old, happily retired people in the Colombian drug cartels, you know? Anyway, the girl, Cataleya (played as a 9-year-old by a firecracker named Amandla Stenberg), makes her way to Chicago, where her uncle (Cliff Curtis) lives, and there she is trained in the ways of vengeance, assassination, and so forth.

All of which sounds like perfectly good fodder for a high-octane action thriller, does it not? Instead, Colombiana is disappointing Euro-cheese, written and produced by Euro-cheese aficionados Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen and directed by Besson’s protege, the comically pseudonymed Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3). These fellows would have done well to re-watch some of the stupid-cool action flicks that inspired them — including some of Besson’s — to remind themselves of the basics: go big or go home; maintain a fast pace; and keep things short.

We jump ahead 15 years. Cataleya, now played by the beautiful but emaciated Zoe Saldana, has been bumping off bad guys one at a time in an effort to draw out the guy she’s really after, who’s hiding in the U.S. under the CIA’s protection. Our introduction to her as an adult sets a precedent for the rest of the movie: she assassinates one of her targets by executing a plan — all by herself — that requires her to do several physically impossible things while relying on an intricate knowledge of floor plans, security measures, and schedules that she could not possibly know, some of which would in fact be impossible to predict.

When she isn’t performing superhuman feats of mind-reading and acrobatics, she’s carrying on a pointless relationship with a guy named Danny (Michael Vartan), who doesn’t know her real name or anything else about her but loves having sex with her. Somehow he thinks he has fallen in love with her for real, though this is unlikely, not to mention boring.

Meanwhile, an FBI agent (Lennie James) is hunting this mysterious assassin, eager to learn who’s killing all the bad guys so he can thank her, I guess. Dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, etc. You know the drill. You’ll know it really well by the time the movie is over, because it sticks to the formula without deviation.

If Colombiana were 25 minutes shorter, it would probably be an agreeably dumb action flick. But since we can’t possibly be expected to take any of it seriously — right? RIGHT?? — why try our patience by dragging things out for 107 minutes? We all love a steamy pile of frivolous nonsense now and then, but it has to move quickly or we lose interest, like a joke that stops being funny. Megaton and company do know it’s a joke, right? RIGHT??

Who the HELL IS THIS ASSHOLE??? Funny when white women make stupid, dumbass movies, it’s a *HIT*, and they get MEDIA GLORY,  when women of color are the *Leading Lady* or *Star* of a movie, for some strange reason the movie is *stupid* *dull* *boring*, or this *roll* wasn’t meant for her etc, etc, etc.  It just proves that assholes like Eric D. Snider is biased, and he’s one of many idiotic movie critics who need to go jump off of Mount DumbAss. Matter of fact, I’ll push him.

  • dirkdee

All movie go’ers forget what this idiot’s saying. Colombiana is a great movie from beginning to the end. He an A..Hole who probably thinks that SuperStar was great. So if you’re listening to this fool who actually does’nt no any thing about good movies then you might as well join him on the get a clue list.

I bet “Madam X” has compiled a lengthy list of dumb action movies starring white ladies that got rave reviews from me. I am eager to see that list!

“dirkdee” makes several good points, and presents them logically, rationally, and coherently.

I have seen Zoe Saldana’s roll and I found it quite unsatisfactory. She can’t even go backwards.

  • Kingbry7

You’re so right, dirkdee (if that is your real name). I usually take my movie reviews from people who don’t know how to use apostrophes. Much more reliable.

  • Fishboy

Apostrophes? What about spelling?: “no” vs. “know” or “then” vs. “than”
But spelling and grammar aside, arguments based in assumptions rather than evidence can’t get very far. Look up his other reviews chumps. When you make “assumptions” you make an “a$$” out of “u” and… “mpti…” Crap!

  • Fishboy

Yeah, I got in a hurry. One spelling mistake less for dirkdee. The big mistakes still stand.

  • Hewhoshallnotbenamed

He’s dead on. Stop thinking that because he said this a bad movie and the main actress is a minority that  he is racist.  I agree there are a lot of bad white women movie’s. When has Jennifer Aniston been in anything good or Julia Roberts lately?  But he is dead on. Who cares about  a character whose parents were in the drug business who get killed–where is the empathy here?  Maybe if they had seen good movies like Kill Bill or La Femm Nakita–which this movie is a poor imitation of it could have been better, but sadly it was not.  Chill Madam X. I am a latino and will tell you this is an apt review.  You can put lipstick on a pig and its still a pig. Crap is still crap, and Colombiana should be called Crapbiana.

It looks like to me that this guy wouldn’t know a Very Good movie if it came up to him and drew “GREAT MOVIE” on his chest! I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it!!! It told a story (WELL), it had enough action scenes in it (more believable to Angelina’s “Salt”. I didn’t see Zoe coming out of impossible action scenes w/o A SCRATCH or limp). It was NEVER boring and definitely NOT too long. And “emaciated”??? She’s petite. Small frame WITH figure. But he has to transform her into an insulting description of “emaciated”??? >Roger Ebert he will never be< I'm glad I went to go see it before I tripped across this review – I would have thought that it was just a DOG!!!

  • Stickn it to da man!

EricDSnider, how dare you write a review that expresses your opinion?! On a review website?! There is a time and a place for that sort of thing, and you sir were foolish to think that this would be such a place!

I like the little girl version of cataleya. i could imaging that girl naked with perky tits, tight ass,& really tight pussy. i would like to fuck that little girl. i know her tight pussy on my dick would make me cum hard in her.

  • Jason B

Well I like her acting for 1 and 2 she played really well in Avatar…and it tells a story of some corruption in Columbia and other surrounding Countries. I cannot grade it low since I haven’t seen it so for now I will give it an A+

  • Jason B

yes especially Brad Pitt’s old flame Jennifer Anniston..I really dislike her arrogance. I am partially white but do not take offense of any comments against whites…its just business actually…I like Phil-ASian fliks and they are pretty good actors over their too.

  • Jason

they dont understand internet “JARGONz”  LMFAO!!! fukkem all to h3ll >.<

  • Jason B

Well again for 1 and 2 this chic is so so HOT!!! how can I ever set her to a lower level marker on the critix list

  • This movie suck

I’m a woman of color and it was a stupid, dull, boring dumbass movie. Zoe did the best she could with it tho. The highlights were when the zoe saldana as a school girl fetus stabs a man and escapes using james bond athletics, or how they go from “this can’t be a woman” to this woman is some random picture that we randomly happened to find floating about cyber space…I rewound that part FIVE times to make sense of how they hell they found her based off that camera phone pic.Still makes no sense and i’m STILL watching this dumb ass movie. Im watching it for FREE online and I want my freaking mone back.

And These Racist Bastards Give Credit To Bushit For Getting OSAMA.

  • bigrob8706

the movie was good not amazing or even over the top.lets just say its a set up movie for her to make a lil money get more notice and eventually she will get a better movie.Actors are not always responsible for a movie not doing so well, remember the director controls alot of what goes on they may ask the actors to peform a certain way and the end result may lead people to say wth was that. but as far as im concerned the summer has ended all the big blockbuster movies are done and this movie stick out as a decent film to go watch are atleast wait for redbox and netflix.

  • Mr.BankCity

“emaciated”?  this is the game the industry plays so if an actress wants to make it they have to play and it’s safe to say for “Zoe Saldana” it’s ball game!! I haven’t seen the movie myself but I will be viewing it soon despite what ever “the critic ” says. It’s time for new faces and by new I mean more faces of the people who represent the raw pace of the industry. Europeans have always been the face of action and great roles even if they are not believable. How is this any different from  a tomb raider (minus specific theatrical details of course but not theme wise) or any other countless new age charlie’s angels style flick. This “critic”is Biast and Sophomoric. I would stick to the script to if that was what film.com was paying for.

  • Roy

Not sure what to make of the movie yet but the review was well written, and highly entertaining!
