synopsis
Based on the true story of the explosive events that took place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971 when African-American football coach Herman Boone was hired to guide an integrated but racially polarized high school team--the T.C. Williams Titans. Angry, stubborn and a rigid taskmaster, Boone faces a cool reception from the team's players as well as an awkward relationship with assistant coach Bill Yoast, a local white man with seniority and a tradition of winning who was bypassed for the job. It's made clear that Bill has feelings of animosity for having to be an assistant under a black man. As the two men learn to overcome their ignorance and bigotry and realize that they have much in common--integrity, honor, and a strong work ethic--they work together to transfom a group of angry, unfocused players into a dynamic winning team of responsible young men. In the process, they also unite a divided community and ensure that Virginia will always "Remember the Titans."

On the surface, this football saga is the kind of well-intentioned, racial drama for which Spike Lee seems to be yearning. Down deep, though, Remember the Titans is distressingly shallow. Based on a true story -- in Hollywood-speak that means there's some truth in it -- the film recounts the forced integration of Virginia's T.C. Williams High School in 1971 and the conflict that ensues when Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), a black coach from North Carolina, is brought in to lead the football
The topic of race relations during the time of forced integration in the Southern school system is perhaps the last film one would expect to emerge from the likes of Jerry Bruckheimer, who has previously produced such heinous films as Gone in 60 Seconds and Coyote Ugly. Enjoyable despite its overly simplistic depiction of racial tensions, Remember The Titans is a feel-good movie to end all feel-good movies that somehow is unencumbered by its use of cliches from both sports dramas and films on
