Yuji is a mid-level gangster in Taipei, who lives in a hovel and does various jobs for whoever will pay. One day, a woman he can hardly recall arrives, dumping at his door a mute child she insists is his son. He ignores the boy, who forages in alleys until he befriends a similarly orphaned puppy. Then Yuji meets a prostitute who helps him evade the gangsters whom Yuji has got himself into trouble with, and the three become a family of sorts.
