Annaluise "Puenktchen" and Anton are best friends, even though Annaluise's parents are rich and Anton's mother a poor cafe worker. When Anotn's mother becomes ill and can't afford treatment, Anton steals a gold cigarette case from his friend's house. The ensuing showdown causes rifts in Annaluise's family and spurs both children to take further measures to save their families.
