Predicting the Marketing Slogans of 2011

What’s the most important factor in movie marketing? Ask anyone in the business and they’ll tell you the same thing: not having M. Night Shyamalan’s name attached.

The second most important thing, however, is a good tagline. Think of all the famous ones. “Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.” “In space no one can hear you scream.” “Who you gonna call?” “They’re ba-ack.” Classic slogans like those can really sell a movie, regardless of the film’s actual quality.

That skill might be tested this year, when so many films look like they’re going to need all the promotional help they can get. So what do the marketing wizards have in store for us in 2011? Here are our predictions.

Scre4m

“Slasher? I hardly knew her!”

“From the director of My Soul to Take.”

“It’s gonna be st2pid.”

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

“Get ready for mass Bay-hem.”

“Less than meets the eye.”

“Something Witwicky this way comes.”

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

“Shake your booty.”

“Rated arrr.”

“Thought Sparrow was finished? You don’t know Jack.”

X-Men: First Class

“Wolverine who?”

“Prepare the amnesia bullets!”

“So help us, we will keep doing this until we get it right.”

Thor

“It’s hammer time.”

“The gods must be crazy.”

“May the Norse be with you.”

Kung Fu Panda 2

“Ladies and gentlemen, the fu fighters.”

“Get ready for the king of Kung.”

“The China monologues.”

The Smurfs

“Who’s your Papa?”

“It’s gonna blue your mind!”

“Good things come in small packages, but then those packages explode when you open them.”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

“He’s one lucky son of a witch.”

“Things are getting Harry.”

“Wanded: dead or alive.”

The Hangover Part II

“Same jokes, different continent.”

“Now 100% Mel Gibson-free!”

“Witness the Chrisfarleyization of Galifianakis.”

Sherlock Holmes 2

“Get a clue.”

“No s***, Sherlock.”

“Holmes-y don’t play that.”
