A young Japanese woman journeys to Hawaii circa 1918 to marry a man whom she's only known through a photograph and letters. Upon her arrival, however, she's shocked to discover that he's at least 25 years her senior. The following year is spent on a sugar plantation--a time of hardship, struggle, and unexpected joy.
