Features Pedro Zamora's story as a unique cast member on "The Real World." Zamora was born in Cuba and came to the United States as part of the Mariel boatlift in 1980. The youngest child in his family, Zamora's life changed when his mother died when he was thirteen. Already a top student in high school, he immersed himself in his studies. At the same time, he also began engaging in unprotected sex. When he was sixteen, he donated blood to the Red Cross and discovered that he was HIV-positive. After digesting the initial shock, Zamora made the decision to become an activist and educator. He moved to San Francisco and auditioned for "The Real World," seeing it as the perfect opportunity to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS. The producers invited him to participate because of his eagerness and openness, qualities that would endear him to some housemates and antagonize others. The exposure brought Pedro worldwide recognition--for millions of people, he was the only person they knew living with HIV.
