Sundance Review: Paper Heart is Slightly Adorable
Michael Cera plays himself in this documentary-style romantic comedy. And isn't Cera always slightly adorable?
Charlyne Yi in "Paper Heart" -
Overture Films
When I walked out of Paper Heart I was a bit ticked off. You see, I didn't think it was romantic enough to fall under the romantic comedy genre, or dark enough to exist in the realm of Mockumentary. I suppose I shouldn't fault the film for genre-splitting though, because it is extremely funny at times. The fact that it doesn't all add up? Water under the bridge! The story, told in documentary style, is of Charlyne Yi trying to find love. You see, she doesn't believe she's capable of such a thing. Enter Michael Cera (as Michael Cera). He develops a little crush on Charlyne and we're off and running with our essential conflict. Will Charlyne fall in love with Michael? Will the director get all the shots he needs to make the documentary? Will we all learn something about love ... and ourselves? The answer to the last question is "no" but that's okay. Michael Cera fires off some very solid one-liners and Charlyne Yi has epically funny facial expressions. The whole relationship is a bit like watching pandas mate. Everything is awkward, forced, and furry. Wait, strike that last part. But the rest is all true, as Michael and Charlyne form the least natural couple this side of Michael and Lisa Marie. So I would say see this one if you're into the comedic stylings of Michael Cera. It would also make a decent date night for youngish hipsters. Though you'll certainly find a few chuckles regardless of your relationship status. I'd stay away from this if you're looking to learn something, to see a top-ten movie, or want to be laughing throughout. It's a middling effort, neither amazing nor terrible, like so many of the relationships we've all had. Grade: B- Most Popular Stories
