And the Oscar Hosting Job Goes to … Seth MacFarlane!

The 85th annual Academy Awards just got a whole lot more hilarious.

“Family Guy” funnyman Seth MacFarlane – whose recent foray into the movie-making world as actor, writer and director, “Ted,” was both a box office and critical success – has been tapped by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to host the Oscars on Feb. 24.

MacFarlane issued a tongue-in-cheek statement of playful gratitude on the news, saying “It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars. My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.”

As Entertainment Weekly points out, MacFarlane’s “Family Guy” has poked fun of the Oscars in the past, but this very fact may prove to be a major plus for the Academy, which is likely looking to reinvigorate the program after last year’s lackluster results from recurring host Billy Crystal.

MacFarlane recently hosted the Season 38 premiere episode of “Saturday Night Live” and brought some of his favored characters into play for the opening monologue. Watchers unfamiliar with MacFarlane’s brand of humor should prepare for witty banter, multiple voice-overs, random pop culture reference zingers and (hopefully) one rip-roaring good time.

In addition to “Family Guy,” MacFarlane’s other current TV credits include “American Dad!” and “The Cleveland Show.”
