Paul and Marguerite have been in love for five years, but their affair is a tempestuous one. Immigrants in Quebec, Paul keeps his illegal father in the basement while he goes out to work at the zoo. He borrows animals from the zoo to show his terminally ill son, a child from a previous marriage. Marguerite is only 23, and sees the relationship very differently from Paul.
