Sierva Maria is an adolescent girl born to a noble family and who is never given the chance to determine her own future. When she is bitten a rabid dog and believed to be possessed by a demon, her family officially abandons her. Her father eventually succumbs to a bishop’s advice and takes her to be exorcised. When Cayetano Delaura, a young priest, is charged with the task, Sierva Maria allows her burgeoning sexuality to blossom and the two begin an affair fraught with danger, secrets and passion.
