synopsis
A reconstruction of the events that occurred on the night of October 17, 1961 in Paris through the eyes of the Algerian protesters and the French authorities. The war was winding towards a conclusion and the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) and its supporters were killing policemen in France in an effort to force a withdrawal. The murders led the Parisian authorities to retaliate: beatings of Algerians became commonplace and a curfew was imposed. The FLN called for a peaceful demonstration and more than eleven thousand Algerians took to the Paris streets. Brutal counter-measures were taken by the French authorities, resulting in the deaths of numerous unarmed protestors. Numbers are still disputed, but between forty-eight and two hundred Algerians were killed under orders from the Paris police chief (who is currently imprisoned for crimes against humanity committed during the Second World War).
