New on Streaming Week of Oct 08, 2012 - Movies Streaming/On Demand This Week: ‘Magic Mike,’ ‘That’s My Boy’ & More

This week could get a little dangerous with “Magic Mike” now available through streaming (make sure to stretch before doing any of the moves shown on screen). If you’re feeling a little less physical, there’s the Adam Sandler/Andy Samberg bad-father-good-son comedy, “That’s My Boy.”

And, we’re getting closer to Halloween, which means awesome scary movie marathons. You’ll find a whole bunch available on VOD. Yum!

NEW RELEASES

‘Magic Mike’
Recounting his formidable years as a stripper, Channing Tatum enlists an all-star roster of talent both in front (Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Olivia Munn) and behind the camera (directed by Steven Soderbergh) to explore this world of greased up pecs and lots and lots of dollar bills.
Why Watch It: The film is kinda like an exotic dancer: beautiful on the outside, a tidal wave of serious drama on the inside.
Available On: iTunes (On Demand, VUDU and Amazon Instant on Oct. 23)

‘That’s My Boy’
Playing his usual loudmouthed man child, Adam Sandler is Donny, a guy who’s gained notoriety for being taken advantage of by his teacher when he was 14, leading to a child, which he named Han Solo (Andy Samberg). Now down and out, he reenters Han’s (now named Todd) life just before his son is to be married. You can see where this is going.
Why Watch It: Though Sandler has been in a slump recently, the diehards will find this one entertaining.
Available On: iTunes (On Demand Oct. 16)

The Raven‘The Raven’
John Cusack plays Edgar Allan Poe in this sinister who-done-it that has the famous author pitted against a crazed fan whose murders are inspired by Poe’s work.
Why Watch It: Regardless if you think Poe as a crime fighter is believable, you’ve gotta give Cusack props, as he doesn’t hold back in his portrayal of the legendary scribe.
Available On: Cable On Demand, VUDU

‘Nature Calls’
Patton Oswalt, Johnny Knoxville and Rob Riggle are just a few of the stars in this zany comedy following Scoutmaster Randy (Oswalt) who abducts a group of kids and leads them on a trip into the wilderness in the hopes of opening their eyes about nature. But Randy’s brother, Kirk (Knoxville), is hot on his trail to get them back.
Why Watch It: From the director of “The Catechism Cataclysm,” so don’t expect your usual comedy.
Available On: Cable On Demand, VUDU (In Theaters Nov. 9)

‘The Details’
Tobey Maguire plays a philanderer who, after a string of affairs, begins to realize he’s not untouchable as one husband is after him (Ray Liotta) and one woman is pregnant. Now he has to get creative.
Why Watch It: Dark comedy with a great ensemble that includes Elizabeth Banks, Laura Linney, Kerry Washington and Dennis Haysbert.
Available On: Cable On Demand (In Theaters Nov. 2)

‘Jack and Diane’
In the midst of summer love in NYC, Jack (Riley Keough) and Diane (Juno Temple) spend every moment together, but the thought of them parting begins to take a strange effect on Diane.
Why Watch It: Keough’s performance is eye-opening. (And, as we’re sure you’ve caught on, this movie has no relation to the John Mellencamp song.)
Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand, VUDU, Amazon Instant, YouTube (In Theaters Nov. 2)

OLDIES BUT GOODIES

SawHalloween Moviethon
Now on VOD, check out this collection of scary titles to get you in the mood for Halloween. They’ve got franchises like “Saw,” “Blade,” “Human Centipede” and “Twilight” as well as classics like “The Exorcist,” “Night of the Living Dead” and B-Horror classic “White Zombie” starring Bela Lugosi.

‘In The Loop’
Before “Veep” became a hit on HBO, there was this foul-mouthed political comedy by the show’s creator Armando Iannucci. A take-off from Iannucci’s popular British show “In The Thick,” this combines U.S. and U.K. comedy talents in an examination of current politics and Bush-era fears leading to some hilarious satire.
Available On: iTunes, Amazon Instant

‘Donnie Brasco’
Based on a true story, Johnny Depp plays FBI undercover agent Joe Pistone who has been trying to plug himself into the mob under the guise of his alias Donnie Brasco. He’s finally let in by aging mobster “Lefty” (Al Pacino), but, eventually, Pistone has trouble telling his real life from his job.
Available On: iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant, YouTube
