New on Streaming Week of Nov 12, 2012 - Movies Streaming/On Demand This Week: ‘Brave,’ ‘Savages’ & More

Hurricane Sandy knocked us all on our butts over here on the East Coast, but the good news is this week’s column is super-sized with two weeks worth of titles.

Highlights include Pixar’s latest hit “Brave” and alien comedy “The Watch.” Kids will also love the animated holiday comedy “Arthur Christmas” and, for adults, there’s Oliver Stone’s drug-trade drama “Savages” starring Taylor Kitsch and Blake Lively and Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt’s drama, “Your Sister’s Sister.”

NEW RELEASES

‘Brave’
In Pixar’s first female-centered film, we travel to the Highlands of Scotland to follow Princess Merida as her determination to make her own path leads to a witch’s curse on her family that this fiery redhead must break before it’s too late.
Why Watch It: With the Pixar pedigree, why wouldn’t you watch it?
Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand, VUDU, Amazon Instant

‘The Watch’
Headlined by Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill, a group of suburban men create a neighborhood watch group to bring excitement to their mundane lives. But when they stumble across proof of an alien invasion, these regular Joes become extraordinary.
Why Watch It: The wise-ass stylings of Stiller, Vaughn and Hill leads to some big laughs, though Brit comedian Richard Ayoade steals the film.
Available On: Cable On Demand, VUDU, Amazon Instant, YouTube

Savages‘Savages’
Oliver Stone returns to gritty stories filled with drugs and violence. Here, pot growers played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Taylor Kitsch find themselves facing off against the Mexican cartel when they kidnap their shared girlfriend, played by Blake Lively. Wouldn’t you take on a cartel if your girl were Blake Lively?
Why Watch It: Great action, and Salma Hayek as the cartel’s ice queen leader is perfection.
Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand, VUDU, Amazon Instant, YouTube

‘Arthur Christmas’
Coming out just in time for the holidays, James McAvoy plays Santa’s younger son, Arthur. After realizing that his dad has forgotten to deliver a present, Arthur goes on a journey with his grandfather, Grand-Santa, to drop off the final gift. However, Arthur soon realizes that not everyone in his family is full of holiday cheer.
Why Watch It: One of the better Santa movies that have come out in a while.
Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand, VUDU, Amazon Instant

‘Step Up Revolution’
In the latest dance-crazed movie, two hot youngsters who don’t seem to have anything in common fall in love through their passion for dance… wait, isn’t that the plot from all the “Step Up” movies?
Why Watch It: Totally insane dance moves.
Available On: iTunes, VUDU

Your Sister's Sister‘Your Sister’s Sister’
Jack (Mark Duplass) is in a funk after his brother’s death, which leads his friend Iris (Emily Blunt) to send him to her family’s cabin getaway to clear his head. But when he finds Iris’ sister (Rosemarie DeWitt) already there, a night of tequila drinking leads to some uncomfortable moments when Iris suddenly shows up.
Why Watch It: Great performances that are all loosely improvised.
Available On: iTunes, Amazon Instant, YouTube

‘Red Hook Summer’
Spike Lee’s low-budget love letter to Brooklyn. This powerful story follows Atlanta teen Flik who goes to spend the summer in a housing project in Red Hook with his deeply religious grandfather. Flik soon learns that his grandfather has some demons of his own.
Why Watch It: Vintage Lee, with beautiful photography and a twist you’ll never see coming.
Available On: Cable On Demand

‘Queen of Versailles’
A standout from this year’s Sundance Fest crop. Documentary filmmaker Lauren Greenfield sheds light on the economic crisis by getting unprecedented access into the life of timeshare billionaire David Siegel and his trophy wife Jaqueline, who, while building the largest house in America, are slapped back into reality when the housing crisis hits, potentially crippling David’s empire.
Why Watch It: Outside the excesses the Siegel’s live on, Jaqueline’s antics alone are worth the rental price.
Available On: Cable On Demand

Deadfall‘Deadfall’
Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde play two siblings who split up after a botched casino heist and are on the run during a blizzard. Charlie Hunnam gets in the mix when he stumbles upon them, leading to a bizarre Thanksgiving reunion when all parties converge on his house.
Why Watch It: The plot may be a little sketchy, but Bana’s psycho performance is sickly entertaining.
Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand, VUDU, Amazon Instant, YouTube

‘Bones Brigade’
The latest doc from Stacy Peralta, director of “Dogtown and Z-Boys,” looks at six skateboarders who reinvented the sport as kids in the ’80s. Includes legends like Tony Hawk and Steve Caballero creating moves that eventually would give birth to the X-Games.
Why Watch It: Amazing footage of legends still developing their talents.
Available On: iTunes

‘Nitro Circus: The Movie’
A movie version of the MTV show. Adrenaline junkie Travis Pastrana and his friends go nuts for the big screen doing big thrills that are fun to watch but you’d never attempt (or, at least, we hope not).
Why Watch It: It’s tough to say there are people out there who do crazier things than the Jackass guys, but Pastrana’s posse might.
Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand

OLDIES BUT GOODIES

Out of Sight‘Out of Sight’
Steven Soderbergh’s great adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel stars George Clooney as a career bank robber who strikes an attraction with a U.S. Marshal played by Jennifer Lopez. Shot before both actors landed on the A-list.
Available On: iTunes, Netflix, VUDU, Amazon Instant, YouTube, Hulu (free)

‘Style Wars’
Now available on Netflix, this 1983 documentary shed light on the developing hip-hop culture filled with B-Boys, rappers and graffiti artist. An amazing look back at a music and style before it went global.
Available On: iTunes, Netflix
