synopsis
The story of Cecil Williams, a pioneering political activist in South Africa. Williams was British, but his political engagement was forged in the South Africa of the immediate postwar years. He joined the Springbok Legion, an anti-fascist group that saw blacks as equals, and was also a successful theatrical producer. In that context, he advanced public awareness of both black and gay rights as a high-profile gay liberal who worked with black and white actors. By the beginnings of repression in the 1950s, Williams had already been imprisoned for his activism, when he helped to smuggle Nelson Mandela back into South Africa by posing as his driver. Although he survived this risk, he was put under house arrest, and eventually escaped back to Britain.
