Alt Weekly: ‘LUV’ and More

Welcome back to Alt Weekly, a column in which we shine a spotlight on the independent films brave enough to open opposite Hollywood’s behemoth blockbusters before rolling out in wider release.

This week pits two very different tales of child-rearing opposite the ghoulish likes of “Mama.”

‘LUV’

Filmmaker Cred: This is director/co-writer Sheldon Candis’s feature-length debut; he’s made a number of shorts.

Star Power: Common, Charles S. Dutton, Dennis Haysbert, Meagan Good, Danny Glover, Michael K. Williams and newcomer Michael Rainey, Jr.

Festival/Awards Buzz: This coming-of-age drama has seen a range of reactions since its Sundance debut last year, some of which were quite positive.

Release Details: Opening exclusively at these AMC Theaters across the country.

See This If … You seek something low-key amid all the mainstream action/horror offerings.

‘BIRTH STORY: INA MAY GASKIN AND THE FARM MIDWIVES’

Filmmaker Cred: This documentary marks the first collaboration between directors Sara Lamm and Mary Wigmore.

Star Power: No.

Festival/Awards Buzz: After premiering at last summer’s Los Angeles Film Festival, this look at the modern preservation of midwife birthing practices took home the Audience Award.

Release Details: “Birth Story” opened in NYC on January 16th and will soon open in these other cities.

See This If … The C-section exposé is already sold out.
