Under Turkish legislation, women have equal rights, but they are often subject to the unwritten law of men. Loosely based on the life story of a politically galvanizing singer who was disfigured and eventually murdered by her macho ex-husband, comes this tragic rags-to-riches story which centers on Belgin, an illiterate blonde bombshell whose vocal talents aid her in graduating from being a belly dancer in a low rent dive to becoming a singing idol of arabesque songs in contemporary Turkey. Unlike typical women of her country, Belgin is neither submissive nor silent in private--and, especially, refuses to pretend to be so, even if in public. She asks the man she loves to acccept her way of life, but pays a severe price.
